Keeping your employees happy

Employees are the core of any company and this is a fact that not many top level managers are willing to accept. They are among the main stakeholders of a company and a company’s success will highly depend on them.

Keeping employees happy is therefore a key element if your company is to succeed. You will not only be able to reduce turnover which potentially reduces your company’s goodwill, but you will also be able to keep your best employees who have gained expertise in a certain area of work. The above are just some but a few of the benefits of having a satisfied and happy set of employees.

The following are some tips that can be applied to make sure employees are happy.

Trusting your employees
Employees are adults and as should treated as such. They don’t like being followed and pushed around. This will make them even more negligent and dependent on the immediate authority. This means that when they are not being watched they will be lax and demotivated. Also, they will lack the ability and creativity to face a complex problem comes it comes up.

Show gratitude
When an employee is doing an excellent job, a show of gratitude will go a long way to ensure that your employees are happy. Most employees like recognition for the work they do. When these personal milestones are noticed by the managers, they become elated and motivated to do even more.

Flexibility in the workplace
When employees are given the flexibility to work as they please as long as they are maintaining the same level of quality they highly appreciate it. An employee may wish to work the weekend in exchange to working on weekday due to personal reasons. If this is allowed instead of forcing them to take sick days, they will feel important since their needs are being considered.

Monetary benefits and perks also matter in making the workplace more likeable but a sense of belonging, responsibility and feeling appreciated is more likely to make employees happy.

Presentation tips for managers

img_130112010556

A managerial position comes with a lot of responsibility and maybe rewards. So unlike other employees on a lower strategic level, a manager is expected to provide top notch pitches and presentation to the directors, owners or any other relevant stakeholders.

This therefore creates the need of the presentations to be of high standard and high quality to satisfy their intended functions. I will list some tips that will guide you as a manager in delivering that important presentation to your seniors.

Focus on the intended results
As you make that presentation, make sure that you have been well informed on what exactly your seniors wanted to know. Make this the target of your presentation. The key point here is being able to respond and to answer all the questions that your audience has in mind and expects to be answered.

Make this professional
Keep in mind that this is a professional presentation. Get to the point and avoid being indirect. Make sure that you keep their valuable time in mind, this means that unlike a speech where you may include jokes, your presentation needs to have a serious tone.

Know your audience
Maybe there will be a major stakeholder among your audience. Or that decision maker from that company you want as your client.  Research about them and get information from any available source. Know what to expect and be prepared for it. Make sure you also maintain eye contact. Remember the rest of your audience and pay close attention to them too.

State facts
As a rule of the thumb, you should be able to prove what you say. It is therefore important to carry every relevant document. Make sure that the use of filler words is minimal. They portray uncertainty and lead to your clients being doubtful of your information.

The danger in procrastination

Procrastinating-definition

Procrastination is a man’s worst enemy. Even if sometime he doesn’t realize it. Almost every day we see this happening around us, or even worse, we see ourselves doing it. Finding reasons or even excuses not to work on something now, maybe we don’t like those kind of tasks or maybe you find it a bit too difficult and you don’t feel like your mentally u to it.

Whatever the reason, the end result is the same; work piled up so much that you suddenly realize it is too much to finish given the time frame.  This brings us to some very important reasons why procrastination is not a very wise action.

Feeling overloaded in the end
Procrastination is putting off something intentionally for later, while knowing that it is best to do it now. If too much tasks are procrastinated you will find yourself in a maze of jobs that need to be done within very a very short time, causing a last minute rush.

Lower productivity
Due to the last minute rush, people find themselves having too much to do within a very short time. This may lead to them producing shady and lower quality results in the rush to remain within the stipulated time frame.

In most cases, procrastination is caused because activities which are less important are given more preference compared to the important ones, often just because it’s more fun or easier to perform.

Since procrastination can cause a lot of stress and even declined productivity, its best to work on yourself to stop doing it. For starters, these two tips can help you to start being a better and more productive person;

Dividing a huge task into short achievable tasks
This will make it easier to start a long project; a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. It will be helpful to reward yourself for every successful short milestone you have completed.

Be in a constructive environment
Avoid irresistible temptations by staying in a constructive environment. This way you will be able to focus on the most important things. Social networks can be a huge factor leading to procrastination and keeping away from them at least until you are done would be a wise thing to do.

Tips for developing leadership skills

leadershipAt more than a single instance you may be called to exercise leadership. These calls for leadership may be mandatory or optional but how well you handle them will be a huge determinant of whether such potentially rewarding opportunities will remain to be awarded to you.

Good leadership skills are needed especially for people in positions of authority and we will all find ourselves here at some point or another. Self-leadership skills are also needed for any person in order to succeed in their personal lives. For you to become an effective and successful leader, keeping the following tips in mind might get you a great head start.

Servant leadership
This is the act of being ready to serve even as you lead. This is not only a show of humility but also a show of ability to do well in the shoes of the people you are leading.

Servant leadership is one of the proven effective ways that makes a leader gain the respect that is due to them. Every leader should prove that they can handle what they expect their followers are asked to do.

Decision making skills
This one goes without saying. People will expect their leader to be the one who comes up with the best decisions to though problems. Whenever there is a conflict, a leader is the one people look at for help with the decision and too come up with best solutions. A leader should therefore be really good at making the tough decisions and providing solutions to problems.

Be a great motivator
If you want to become a successful leader, you have to be a great motivator. This starts with self-motivation. Try to find that inner strength that will keep you going throughout that challenging task. People expect a leader to offer the motivation needed to complete a project and to offer the emotional strength to continue a difficult task.

Other useful leads are being able to communicate clearly with anyone in the team and making it clear that you can be reached by anyone who has a problem. Having noticeable charisma and letting everyone know that you not only sympathise but feel empathy too in times of hardships will go a long way to bridging a gap that may prevent you from being seen a good leader.
